ADMISSION TO THOMAS READE SCHOOL

We warmly welcome girls and boys age 4 – 11 years at any time of the year, space permitting.

For children who need a place for next September, 2025, you need to apply for a primary school place by January 2025.

We have two open mornings for prospective parents on 9th October and 9th December. This is a fantastic opportunity to visit our school in action. If you would like to book a place, please contact the office.

FAQs

Here are some questions parents sometimes ask in connection with admissions

Would it be possible for us to come and look round Thomas Reade School before we apply for a place for our child?

You are most welcome to visit Thomas Reade, meet the Headteacher, tour the school and generally find out more for yourself. Please telephone the School Office for an appointment 01235 554795 or attend our Open mornings for prospective parents.

You are about to make a most important family decision, and we believe that it is essential that you visit any school you are considering for your child.

If you live outside Thomas Reade’s catchment area, you are still welcome to come and see us. You will however, be advised to visit your own catchment area school as well. This is in line with the policy agreed by all Abingdon Town Primary Headteachers.

How are places at the school decided?

In agreement with the School Governors, the Local Education Authority (LEA) has decided that Thomas Reade School may admit up to 30 pupils in the academic year 2023/24 in the Reception Year.

You can apply for a school place online at Oxfordshire Admissions

Can I appeal if my child is not offered a place?

The Local Authority publishes the criteria they apply to the allocation of places in an oversubscribed school. You have a right of appeal to a local appeals committee if your application for a place for your child is refused by the L.A. Details of how to do this will be sent at the time of notification of places.

When will my child start school?

Children are offered full time places in the September of the school year of their fifth birthday.

What happens before my child joins the Foundation Stage?

Our aim is to make your child’s entry to the school as happy and confident as possible.

Pre-Visits: Your child will be invited to spend time in school the term before he/she is due to join the Foundation Stage.

Induction: You will be invited to an Induction Meeting at school in the second half of the term before your child joins Thomas Reade. This is an opportunity for you to learn more about your child’s class and practical details in connection with this. Your child’s class teacher will also visit you and your child at home before they start school.

What happens if I move into the area and I would like my child to attend Thomas Reade School?

Please contact the School Office on (01235) 554795 to make an appointment to meet the Headteacher and tour the school. We are very happy to admit pupils into the school at any stage in their primary school education if a place is available.

How do I enter my child for admission to the Nursery?

You will need to register your child with the school for a nursery place. Parents of children attending our nursery class must still apply for a place in the main school. Please note that your child attending our Nursery does not automatically mean that they will be allocated a place in the Foundation class. It is the responsibility of parents/carers to apply for a school place.

If you have any further questions or would like to arrange a visit, please call the school office on 01235 554795 or by email at office.2587@thomas-reade.oxon.sch.uk
