Thomas Reade Primary School

Languages

Children in key stage 2 (year 3 to 6) learn French as a modern foreign language. Children have a French lesson once a week with their class teacher.

Intent

The intention of the French curriculum at Thomas Reade Primary School is to teach children to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We encourage children’s confidence, we strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language. We strive to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing necessary to enable children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning. We aim to develop the children’s understanding of and curiosity for a different culture. Our MFL curriculum is designed to develop children skills in languages, through regular taught lessons. Children will acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. We follow a combination of schemes of work: “Early Start Languages”, “Light Bulb Languages”, “Twinkl” and ‘La Jolie Ronde’ to ensure coverage and progression across school. All our children in KS2 will have regular language lessons and for two terms, our Year One children benefit also.

Implementation

Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences. 

- Displays are used to remind children of key vocabulary;

- practical activities, songs and games are used to help improve memory and recall;

- in the classroom whether possible instructions are given in French to expose children to the language as much as possible;

- visual prompts are used to support children in translating new vocabulary.

-Duolingo for schools will be introduced from September 2024 to support children's learning.

Impact

We strive to ensure that our pupil’s attainment is in line or exceeds their potential when we consider the varied starting points of all our children. We ensure that children are accessing work at age related expectations, with regular opportunities to be challenged through higher-level objectives. French is monitored in several ways: through written work (where appropriate) in line with school marking policy, through lesson observations, and through oral feedback within the classroom. Feedback is given to teachers in order to encourage and support wider learning across the school. Our foundation subjects are reported on termly and any changes to lessons are made if necessary.

Long term overview
